About Herb Tannenbaum Ph.D.

Licensed psychologist Dr. Herbert Tannenbaum offers grief and stress-relief therapy and other forms of counseling to adults, children, adolescents, families, and couples. In 1981, he founded the Center for Effective Living to provide quality mental healthcare to residents of Bergen County, New Jersey, and surrounding areas. Presently, Herbert Tannenbaum serves as Executive Director of the Center for Effective Living.

Herbert Tannenbaum Ph.D. also owns and manages the Harbor Hills Day Camp, an outdoor recreation and performing arts camp for children ages 3 to 14. He and his staff at the Mount Freedom, New Jersey-based camp organize well-balanced day programs for campers that combine creative arts, aquatics, and other sports and activities. 

Herbert Tannenbaum Ph.D. earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, and a Master’s degree in Psychology from New York University. He went on to work as an associate research scientist and counselor at New York University while simultaneously studying towards a Ph.D. at the school. During his doctoral training, he also served as an adjunct lecturer with Kingsborough Community College, and as an assistant professor in the Department of Health Science at Brooklyn College. Herbert Tannenbaum completed his Ph.D. in 1975. A few years later, he received fellow status with the accredited training society, American Institute for Psychoanalysis. Since then, he has earned his Clinical Instructor and Imago Therapist certifications from the Institute for Relationship Therapy.

In his private practice, Herbert Tannenbaum provides a range of psychotherapy to individuals, groups, and couples. In addition, Herbert Tannenbaum, Ph.D., consults with private- and public-sector mental health delivery programs, and hosts weekend Imago couples therapy workshops titled “Getting the Love You Want”.
